The next beta4 build should be available one week from now. Hopefully, it will be the last beta before the release candidate. There is still a theoretical chance that the final release might be available before Christmas but you we will most likely need to wait until the first half of January.
On wednesday Will and me visited the Usability Symposium 2009 of the Network for User Oriented Software Design, a group which consists mainly of people from the Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences here in Nuernberg and people from local companies such as Astrum. It was the first symposium of this group and they gave three presentations about software usability.
One of the presentations were given by Evamaria Fuchs and Dr. Sigi Olschner, both former SUSE employees who worked in the usability lab. They presented about the development of the KDE KickOff menu that we shipped in version 10-something for KDE 3. Its successor became the KDE 4 default menu. Eva and Sigi presented how consequent usability work which goes along with the development effort can improve the quality measurable. They also gave a very good insight on free software and open source development in general, taking into account that most people from the audience did not have any experience with it. It was a very nice talk.
While Will was presenting KDE 4 to some interested people Sigi gave me some lessons on how to set up and use the eye tracking device that we have in the Boosters team now. We certainly need another lesson and much more knowledge about usability in general but that was a good start – thank you Sigi 🙂
Usability experts out there – our Eye Tracker is ready to be used by you for the good of free software! I am wondering when we will have the first session where we try to examine user experience of our software with that device.

This build was delayed more than usual because we worked on OOo-3.1.1 packages for openSUSE-11.2. The next beta2 build should be available one week from now. The current plans are to provide the final build in the middle of December. Though, the release will most likely slip to January.

BTW on the screen you can see the work in progress openSUSE-LXDE for openSUSE-Factory (the next 11.2). Notice how LXDE use only 108MB RAM and 5% CPU with:

After lots of test i’m ready to release a new openSUSE-LXDE live CD
Here the change log:
Fix: Lxpanel will "flash" no more (workaround, removed battery applet from panel,
this applet make lxpanel crash if no battery is found on laptop)

Please notice how “free -m” on lxterminal show that the REAL used ram is just 67MB with the following running applications:
1) Firefox 3.5.2
2) PCManFM
3) Lxterminal
4) Lxtask
Now that 11.2 gets closer and closer to the rc status being able to play mp3 becomes important in order to make the testing experience even nicer.
Here is my workaround to get that mp3 working in amarok. I do not know about the dvd’s as the only one that I own is to boring to use it for testing purposes

Some cool news for any LXDE users.
The first one, LXDE developers finally started to develop their own Display Manager, that means that soon we’ll need no more the very heavy GDM or the no more developed SLIM.
That new DM is called (as you can think) LXDM and svn snapshot are now available in my home:anubisg1:LXDE repo, as soon it will be stable enought i’ll move it into X11:lxde.

SLIM itself has been improved with a couple of patches and the logotrate support.
The second cool thing is a nice patch i got from a Slackware developer, it add trash support using the python trash-cli based on freedesktop.org standards. PCManFM with trash support is alread yavilable into X11:lxde and home:anubisg1:LXDE repos.

Please consider that home:anubisg1:LXDE needs to be considered a development only repo. I experiment in my repo, and only when i think the changes are stable enought than i’ll move the into OFFICIAL X11:lxde repo.
