Howto: How to create an Userpage

July 2nd, 2009 by

Novell account
==============
First of all, in order to access the forums, build service, features, and bugzilla information a Novell user account must be created.  To create an account visit: https://secure-www.novell.com/selfreg/jsp/createOpenSuseAccount.jsp?target=http://www.opensuse.org and fill out the Form.

Login
=====
After creating a Novell account, you should automatically be logged in and directed to: http://en.opensuse.org/Welcome_to_openSUSE.org.  If you are not automatically logged in, navigate to en.opensuse.org, select “Login” at the top right, and enter your user name and password.

User page
=========
Once you have completed logging in, your user name will be displayed at the top right of the page.
Clicking on your user name will display your user page.  Since you have not edited your page yet, it should be relatively empty.

To edit your user page click on “edit”.  A “Wiki” text entry box will be displayed, allowing you to enter information you would like to share about yourself, such as, your Name, email address, or instant messenger information.

Picture uploading
=================
If you would like to add a picture of yourself, navigate to http://en.opensuse.org/Special:Upload and select a file you wish to upload.  Take note of the statement:

“To include the image in a page, use a link in the form [[Image:file.jpg]], [[Image:file.png|alt text]] or [[Media:file.ogg]] for directly linking to the file.”

This statement describes how to link/bind the freshly uploaded picture to your user page.

Bind your picture to your page by navigating back to your user page and clicking edit.  Click the “Embedded Image” icon.  If you are not sure which icon is the “Embedded Image” icon, hover your mouse over the various icons to display a description of each.

Once you have clicked the correct icon, the text: [[Image:file.jpg]] will be displayed in the “Wiki” text box.  change the file name to the name of the picture you just uploaded.

Click Show preview to see a preview of your changes or Save page to commit the changes to your user page.

openSUSE Day (Chile): Awesome.

June 28th, 2009 by

And the day came. After a six hours trip on bus, and a few minutes of sleep I got to Santiago de Chile. Francisco Toha picked me up so we headed to Universidad Andres Bello for the openSUSE Day. Huge building and plenty of room for everyone. The event started almost on time. I followed the first talk, a bit hoping to have a decent internet connection so I could show a live SUSE Studio test drive. OK, that didn’t happen. The internet traffic ratio was too slow like waiting 59 minutes to build an JeOS appliance was nuts so that was definitely the low aspect of the talk.
Again, huge thanks to Zonker for all the support. openSUSE 11.1 DVDs and stickers were cool and all loved it. Also big thanks everyone from Geeko’s, specially Enrique Herrera, Jose Muñoz, and Francisco Toha. Statistic and evaluation have not been finished yet. Anyway, some pictures here:

You can add the logo itself, or use a program like The GIMP or Inkscape to add the logo to your current background (much like mine, below)

Promoting openSUSE-Edu: Li-f-e

June 14th, 2009 by

Dear IT Store In-charge

This is about introducing a new Operating System tailored for Education purpose.

We have demonstrated openSUSE-Edu Li-f-e(Linux For Education) OS at many stores/malls here in Baroda (India), the store managers were very thrilled to see this new technology. Gujarat State Education Board (GSEB) has introduced Linux and Open Source in curriculum from this year, session starts Monday 15 June 2009. Kerala and Tamil Nadu States are already using linux for few years now. Apart from schools and government offices running Linux, most IT colleges have Linux in their course too.

We would like your stores to keep at least one laptop/desktop running Li-f-e: Linux for Education OS running to give your store an extra advantage of being the place to get this OS free of cost. Linux and hardware that comes preloaded with it will be in massive demand as there are millions of students that will come in contact with Linux through their course curriculum.

The OS is free of cost, you are free to make as many copies you need, it can be run directly from a DVD without installation, it can also be installed very easily on a separate partition to get dual boot system running amicably along with Windows system. The OS is virus free and comes packed with hundreds of applications required by students as well as everyday user.

Details about the OS is here: http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Live

We believe this has tremendous potential of increasing sales of hardware from your stores and attract lot more happy customers. Our aim is to get the best technology to the students who will be coming in contact with this technology for the very first time, your store will greatly benefit by the goodwill this gesture will generate.

Kind regards

Jigish Gohil

A Week of Geeko Love

openSUSE Week Counter

openSUSE Week Counter

UPDATE: New Dates. You now have more time to plan!

As you can see the week of the 11th to the 17th of May is openSUSE Week.  What’s so special about this week?  Well in a nutshell, the aim is to get all corners of the community together to focus on specific topics.  These topics range from wiki cleanup to packaging; testing certain features/functions to translation work; discussion with the openSUSE Board and almost anything inbetween.

I’d like to suggest a couple of other items to the list (yes I know I need to add them to the wiki).  Both items are marketing related:

  1. Create good screencasts, ideally of each major component but I’m open to ideas.
  2. As requested by certain a11y users & proponents, close caption the video that we have (and the interviews I still need to upload).
  3. I know I said a couple but maths was never my strong point 😉 Try and do some video interviews that we can group under the “People Of openSUSE” banner.  I’ve already started this but mainly with Novell employees.  If community members are willing to help out, please let me know (it could even be you filming yourself without any need for video conferencing).

So please make sure you come and join the fun, remember the openSUSE community wont succeed unless you join in.  We may even have the opportunity to have a soap box where you can voice your complaints and issues.  The important thing is the openSUSE Week is about you the community for you the community, to get something out of it you need to put something into it.  Lastly it’s all about having good old fashioned geeko fun!  So come along and join the fun 😀
