LXDE: Mission (almost) Accomplished

January 15th, 2010 by

Sorry if i missed to inform you since September but i passed a very bad period, (including a breakage of my hand and with my ex-girlfriend), but now i’m definetly better, so here i am to inform you about some wonderful progress.

first of all:

LXDM has been released

exactly, LXDE Desktop Manager has been released and looks to be fully working 🙂

2nd) Upgrades, upgrades and more upgrades

several new package version has been released, including lxappereance, lxmusic, lxpanel and so on.

3rd)  We are going to fix a small not-portable issue due to X-KDE-SubstituteUID

check bugzilla #540627 for more informations, what you want to know any way, is that we fixed .desktop files to allow to run applications as root even outside GNOME or KDE

4th) Factory, factory, factory

LXDE is into openSUSE_Factory now! yes, that means lxde will be installable on 11.3 from OSS repo, and probably from DVD.  I actually submitted lxde pattern request and yast2 pattern icons are already into yast svn. So people.. PLEASE TEST AND REPORT!!

5th) OPENSUSE-LXDE MAILING LIST

yes people, we have a new opensuse-lxde mailing list now! Please subscribe to opensuse-lxde@opensuse.org for help, support and development… i’m waiting for you!!

6th) Not official support on openSUSE <= 11.1

That’s not my choice but it’s due to gtk changes, because of that X11:lxde will no more take care of failures on suse <= 11.1. new lxde packages requires gtk2 >= 2.16.0 and backport is impossible (see lxappereance for example).

I think that’s all, if not i’ll write a new blog post, but now i must go to my work or i’ll be fired!!

Regards

Andrea (your favourite openSUSE-LXDE admin!)

What a Cool App: screenie

January 14th, 2010 by

Sometimes you stumble over an application that is really cool and makes your day. Of course when you tell your colleagues everyone knows it – except you, well…

Today I had this nice experience with a little tool called screenie. It helps to arrange screenshots or images in general nicely such as this example where I made boring Hermes screenshots look nice: Hermes Screenshot Composition

It does it with a perfect simple interface on which you drop three images out of a file manager. A handful of options allow you to adjust the image to your needs and there you are – your little screenshot composition simply looks amazing, after a few moments of work. Great software.

Btw, iit’s only around 500 lines of code and a couple of resource files. Amazing, must be based on a quite powerful toolkit utilized by a real smart guy…

If you also want to look nice, no idea how, but for screenshots and stuff quickly install screenie from the KDE::Community repository.

Ah yes, I know, you know it already, of course 😉

openSUSE Edu Li-f-e at FOSS.in

December 8th, 2009 by

Last week was one of the biggest gathering of FOSS geeks from all over India and some from abroad at foss.in in Bangalore.  Unfortunately it was not as big as I had expected. Here are some of the pictures from the event, also managed to get some “FOSS celebrities” to pose with our DVD. It was fun meeting many people only known to me via IRC nick or Planet India. Over 250 Li-f-e DVDs were distributed, many students from various parts of India were also part of the event, students from DA-IICT and IIIT helped burn some DVDs too. Thanks Pradeepto and Srinivasa for KDE and GNOME t-shirts, it was great pleasure meeting again with openSUSE B’lore team, puthali, girishks, srinidhibs, ravim85, abharath and Ex-Novellite  Hardik Dalwadi(Cannonical).

Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften is over

October 27th, 2009 by

Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften is an event to show all kinds of science in a simple way to the public. Many education facilities and companies in the Nuernberg area participated. It took place last Saturday and we had a rather long but very successful night. Our room at Georg-Simon Ohm Hochschule (technical university) was pretty well visited over the whole evening. We could welcome visitors with all kind of technology level – from pure beginners, long time Linux users to developers with deep technical knowledge. We served them 4 different dishes:

  • openSUSE Education
Lars showed the benefits openSUSE Education has for schools and students and got in contact with a Nuernberg school which now want to move 30 clients to openSUSE Education.

    Will giving a desktop talk
  • Games on Linux
Andreas and Marco from live.linuX-gamers.net project showed impressively what games they offer from a Live-USB stick and received pretty many “wows” and “ahhs”. To them a special thanks for supporting the openSUSE project.
  • openSUSE 11.2/Desktop
Here Juergen showed the strength of GIMP by merging two ancient city maps of Nuernberg into one. With that he was a real visitor magnet.
Will demonstrated the latest KDE and GNOME desktops. People were impressed by Digikam’s photo management capabilities, and interested to learn how the default KDE 4 desktop can be customized to resemble a more traditional KDE 3 or GNOME desktop, and that you can install thousands of different programs with YaST instead of having to download them from some website.
  • Build Service, Participation etc.
Pretty many visitors asked how they can contribute to openSUSE and were happy that they don’t have to be a developer to contribute. Wiki edits, translation and bug reports is sufficient. The more technical audience were impressed by the opportunities the Build Service offers them for their daily work.

Kids playing games on Linux

Our room in the university was well attended till 11pm or so and we gave a talk each hour about different topics like “Introduction to openSUSE 11.2”, “Open Source philosophy”, openSUSE Education, Games on Linux and others. We handed out more then 500 openSUSE DVDs and had way more than 500 people attending our room.

People are interested in Linux and Linux is very well received. After a few focused questions which all started with “Does this … work with Linux?” people left our room, taking a DVD and saying, “If its that good, I’ll give it a try”. Most frequent question that evening was “How do you earn money?”. As many people know at which cost a Windows license or Windows Word come its not easy to understand that our products come for free and we charge for maintenance and support.

With our room at the university where several other events took place we could take advantage of an attractive venue for visitors. Thanks to that and thanks to our people who spent a Saturday night supporting openSUSE this was a successful participation and we should continue participate at “Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften” to fill the saying “From the local to the Global”.
