LibreOffice 3.5 available for testing on openSUSE

I’m happy to announce first LibreOffice 3.5 packages for openSUSE. They are available in the Build Service LibreOffice:Unstable project. It provides many interesting features:

  • better UI for header/footer handling
  • multi-line input bar in Calc
  • Import filter for Microsoft Visio documents
  • enhanced custom shapes import
  • modeless  word count dialog
  • improved font hinting for high quality docs
  • more secure encryption algorithm (AES-256) for password protected files
  • better displaying of non-printable characters on the end of line
  • and much more

The current openSUSE packages are based on the LibreOffice 3.5.2 release. Please, look for more details about the openSUSE LibreOffice build on the wiki page.

The openSUSE LO team hopes that you will be happy with this release. Though, any software contains bugs and we kindly ask you to report bugs. It will help us to fix them in the future releases.

The current LibreOffice-3.5 packages are based on the second bugfix release and should be pretty stable. I want to move them into the LibreOffice:Stable project within next two weeks. I just want to make sure that I did not do any mistake during packaging, e.g. breaking dependencies. Also the KDE4 integration need to be tested because it was not provided by the upstream build. Any feedback is welcome.

openSUSE 12.1 Multimedia Built on Susestudio

I was Inspired by the time  in a remote area, which is absolutely no internet connection, but I have problem when trying to share the DVD installer openSUSE 12.1 to Students and teachers at the vocational school, because the default openSUSE 12.1  distribution does not include Audio & Video codec, the issue of License GPL (General Public License) that embraced by the openSUSE distro. I try to make openSUSE Multimedia is ready for use by the user without having to depend on internet connection because they have to install Codecs Audio & Video.
Nothing is different the official openSUSE 12.1 with openSUSE Multimedia, I just added some applications that do not exist in the original distribution of openSUSE and add Restricted_formats  codec, in addition to applications and libraries that were included are up to date of http://download.opensuse.org/update/12.1/.

openSUSE 12.1 Multimedia 32-bit Base on openSUSE  12.1, using the default desktop  Gnome  3 sprinkled with cinnamon.
openSUSE 12.1 Multimedia  built using susestudio.com, and are designed to be ready to use for users who want to feel the openSUSE but trouble Internet connection, because they have to install codecs mp3, mp4, wmv and some other restricted format http://opensuse-community.org/Restricted_formats.

As for some of the packages included in it are:

April KDE Updates available for openSUSE (KDE 4.8.2)

The April set of KDE updates to Workspaces, Apps and Platform are available now for openSUSE in our KDE:Release:48 repository. This offers you the latest stable software from upstream KDE for openSUSE releases. As point releases, these are an essential upgrade for your production openSUSE installations.

Get them now at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/48/openSUSE_12.1/.

The repository for openSUSE 11.4 is being created at the time of writing at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/48/openSUSE_11.4

Users who already have the KDE:Release:48 registered in YaST need only zypper up or upgrade with YaST.

The packaging script was updated because I have a compile error when building a kernel module fglrx in the kernel 3.2.8+ and 3.3+. Due to the very tight time window, the patches could no longer be incorporated into AMD Catalyst 12.3. Only in the upcoming AMD Catalyst 12.4, the patches from me for openSUSE will be available. AMD Catalyst 12.5 they will be officially included for all other distributions. Yes, with the makerpm-amd script made for you, I can despatch on very simple, convenient and quick patches or missing useful extensions via the script packaging update. Who need to wait months.
Driver support now AMD Radeon HD 7950, HD 7970, HD 7990

News, the build -3 now should build perfectly with kernel 3.2+ & 3.3, Thanks to Sebastian for the patch

AMD has released some time later the driver. The only reason was the fact that AMD has jumped over the version 8.94 because of possible driver issues with some graphics cards. I’ve also updated the packaging script because AMD had unfortunately not include my changes in their AMD installer. (Remember? No time? Who knows … Especially since AMD closed mailing list was down.) It affects even the atieventsd.sh init script. There has been specified for the start of the script in run level 3 and also the XDM (X window manager) provided what IMHO makes no sense. On the other hand, the power mode script (ati powermode.sh) kicked out for good. Since the driver already supports the suspend mode and does not require a helper script anymore.
Driver support now AMD Radeon HD 7950, HD 7970, HD 7990

With this version AMD Catalyst Gnome 3.2 issues (flickering and screen cracks) are finally resolved.
According to AMD, the notebook with the PowerXpress technology (Intel-/AMD-Grafikkarte – discrete GPU) should work again.
I would be grateful if someone could test this functionality for me and give me feedback. Thank you.

The rpms version 8.930 are available from Friday January 27th

My advise is to firstly remove any existing version with zypper rm, then just zypper in the new version, even if 8.930 are the first version I’ve seen making its upgrade correctly.

As usual, I let the last 2 previous versions in the repository, just in case you need it.

Catalyst 8.930 fglrx 12.1 in action

Tested on a fresh 12.1 + updates with a stock kde 4.7.2

Factory rpms are not available actually, I’ve not be able to build a new building machine for it.
Anyways, factory and 12.2 should keep their effort on debuging and testing widely the free radeon driver.

Cinnamon on openSUSE

Mint developers have forked gnome-shell, their aim is to provide all the goodness that gnome3 brings with familiarity of gnome2. If you are using openSUSE 12.1 and want to try out this new DE get the test packages here.

There are some issues like it is still not possible to configure everything via a GUI(use dconf-editor). I guess this is because the project is in initial stage and the rough edges will be sorted out as further development and contributions flows in.

Some gnome-shell extensions have been ported to work with Cinnamon, to enable them use dconf-editor, for example the org -> cinnamon -> enabled-extensions should look like this for all available extensions to be enabled:

Please note that the package is for testing purpose only, it will not be maintained/updated in future, so if you are a developer who can hack and want to contribute to that project check it out, please report bugs directly on cinnamon project issue tracker, preferably with a patch fixing the issue ;). Gnome 2 under openSUSE 12.1

Updated to openSUSE 12.1 I found myself feeling nostalgia about Gnome 2 which was featured as part of openSUSE 11.4. I quickly enabled openSUSE 11.4 repository and carefully installed Gnome 2 packages from there. After installing each package I barred version modification and thoroughly checked so that no Gnome 3 packages installed. After work done I found that Gnome 2.32 works under openSUSE 12.1 pretty well without visible glitches.

Several of you has all kind of non feature (mostly called bugs) with Gnome3.2 and kde4 etc…

Okay, now that was a long night for me was.  I’ve researched intensively since yesterday evening after the problem of GNOME 3.2 and the XvBA hardware acceleration on openSUSE 12.1. Here, a blog reader has pointed out that the direct installation of the AMD Catalyst could solve the problem. However, I think the direct installation of anything since like AMD will move the existing files, and thus endangering the integrity of files. But I had to start somewhere and so did the RPM package and direct install AMD compared. I could detect no difference in principle, except that some files were installed in a different directory, where they had really nothing to be related. I could at first make any sense why the RPM installation failed. To me a very banal story is remembered. A specific search path ld.so.conf could possibly be kicked out in openSUSE 12.1. I have my current openSUSE 11.4 /etc/ld.so.conf compared with that of openSUSE 12.1 and lo and behold some search paths were removed. I have the necessary path to /usr/X11R6/lib/ or created and /usr/X11R6/lib64 in /etc/ld.so.conf.d/fglrx.conf for the fglrx driver, and lo and behold “vainfo” tells me that everything is in order. Now comes the interesting question: Is the problem fixed with GNOME 3.2 now? The answer: YES!  So, dear people, you invite the makerpm-ati-down script with the updated packaging script installs the driver as usual and have fun with the new openSUSE 12.1 and the AMD Catalyst driver.

All rpms are updated now

The 8.911 version are available from saturday November 19th

My advise is to firstly remove any existing version with zypper rm, then just zypper in the new version

Factory rpms are not available actually, Factory 12.2 has just change it’s version number in /etc/SuSE-release and thus is not detected for the moment.
The next version should see 12.2 supported (December). Anyway you have to debug radeon on factory please!
