openSUSE-LXDE 11.3 live CD

Hi people,

I know lots of you was waiting for that, and i am really sorry if it took some time, but i can finally announce the first beta release for our 11.3 live cd.

It is still a beta and such as it have some flaws, like for example it doesn’t fit into a CD yet. The good news is that this is an hybrid and permanent iso, so you can use dd to copy the iso into your usb pendrive.

Please help us testing and reporting bugs and issues you find.

i believe i should be able to release new isos soon, i need to at least provide you isos able to fit into a cd!

How to setup Edu servers on Li-f-e

openSUSE Edu Li-f-e comes loaded with softwares useful for educational institutions, including servers that do everything from course management, student information system to library management.  Although the setup is fairly easy for sysadmins who know what exactly to do, it is quite a difficult task for new Linux user or a teacher without any prior sysadmin knowledge wanting to try out. Get in touch with us if you would like to contribute to openSUSE Education project by creating a script or better still a GUI to automate these tasks.

openSUSE Launch Party at MSU, BCA, Vadodara

We had a great time yesterday showing off the latest openSUSE Edu Li-f-e based on openSUSE 11.3. Over 120 people packed in the persentation hall, many of them had to stand throughout. I am sure everyone present were impressed with what they saw, they all took home Li-f-e DVD to get the first hand experience.

openSUSE Edu Li-f-e 11.3 available now!

openSUSE Education team is very thrilled to announce the availability of openSUSE Edu: Linux for Education(Li-f-e). Li-f-e is built on openSUSE 11.3. The aim of this DVD is to provide complete education and development resources for parents, students, teachers as well as IT admins running labs at educational institutes

It comes bundled with a wealth of softwares carefully selected to meet every need. Educational softwares covering wide range of subjects such as IT, mathematics, chemistry, astronomy, electronics etc catering to students right from preschool to research.

Softwares for graphic designers include GIMP, Inkscape, Blender and more. Office applications to work on pdfs and any office formats including those of the latest MicroSoft Office is included.

Workshop at Party Quijote

Last weekend I went to Party Quijote, which is probably the biggest LAN party of Castile (Spain). It was organized by the regional government (Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha), local universities (Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, Universidad de Alcalá de Henares) and other institutions (Centro de excelencia de software libre de Castilla-La Mancha, Fundación Insula Barataria, Ayuntamiento de Azuqueca de Henares). Some of its sponsors were Cisco, Telefónica, Iberdrola and Caja Castilla-La Mancha. This year Party Quijote took place in the city of Azuqueca de Henares, which is very close to Guadalajara and Madrid. For more information, take a look at Party Quijote’s website

Anyways, I thought it was a great opportunity to promote openSUSE and KDE  in my region, so I organized a workshop: Crea tu propio Live CD (build your own Live CD). Yes, it was a LAN party but there were also Linux-related talks and workshops.

openSUSE Edu Li-f-e 11.3 RC1

Hello Community

openSUSE 11.3 is almost Gold, with that openSUSE Education team is also ready with the “Release Candidate” of Li-f-e based on 11.3.

Some of the highlights of this upcoming release:

  • Tons of Education softwares
  • KDE, GNOME, Sugar desktops
  • Full multimedia support
  • Latest LTSP including iTALC support out of the box
  • Much much more for you to discover…

The DVD iso image doubles as live USB image too, just “dd” the iso to 4GB+ USB stick to get fully functional desktop/server on a stick. Check out this development release to report any bugs or missing feature before we go gold.

We are looking for volunteers to do a detailed preview for the launch, drop us a line if you are interested.

openSUSE-LXDE and Italian Press

We all know we are doing well, we see that from your feedbacks, bugreports, obs submitreqs, and IRC. So guys.. Thank you a lot for supporting and helping us.

But do you think there is something better to see your work on a magazine? a national magazine? I guess it’s really exciting isn’t it?

Well we did it! The Italian Linux Magazine wrote two entire pages for us, and our live cd (together with XFCE one) was into the attached DVD or CD!

That was cool!!!

Announce: openSUSE Beego

the openSUSE distribution is the perfect base for specialized projects focusing on a certain area of application. Today, I am happy to announce the start of the openSUSE Beego project and ask you to join in and help to bring it to a success, because we rely on your support and enthusiasm.

What is openSUSE Beego about? Beego is the perfect customized linux distribution for beekeepers who want to manage their bees on a by today never unreached level. With openSUSE Beego we focus on key features like KHive, the management software for the beeyard, the bluetooth based Weightwatch to monitor the hive weigt and of course GHoney, which takes its users to a new level of honey blending by the latest Computer Aided Honey Blending Technology (CAHBT). The latest release of Queen on Rails, a web based bee queen marking and scheduling software is preinstalled and -configured.

All that relies on a perfectly customized kernel to meet the tough requirements of beekeeping. With solid real time capabilities the Beego kernel is able to process all incoming bees at the hives gate for up to 25,000 bee colonies, which is an outstanding high volume no other system ever reached. Both nectar and pollen of each incoming bee are measured and stored into MyBeeSQL, a tuned MySQL variant. Moreover the kernel needed a huge sting proof patch to give it the needed robustness. We could convince a well known openSUSE kernel developer to work on it, discussions on the kernel lists are ongoing under the subject “Sting Proof Patch”.

This project has a bright future for both openSUSE and the world of beekeeping. Again I like to ask for your help and contribution. Please spread the word, join our mailinglists, test and use openSUSE Beego.

That will make the honey even sweeter this year 🙂
