running an openSUSE booth at KDE Akademy 2014

If running a booth is, for sure, an investment of time, energy and money (even if TSP contribute to help you), We often forget to say
how much it’s important for our community and project.

Booths makes openSUSE alive in all open source events! and it’s a great experience to live, for any of us.

Feel the beat!

I strongly believe that openSUSE has be to visible on events like KDE Akademy, Scale, Fosdem, Guadec.
It’s not a question of "Bang for the buck", than a simple obviousness:

  • Fosdem : the biggest open source event in Europe (perhaps in the world) with more than 5000 hackers visiting.
  • Scale : biggest event in North America with more than 3000 attendees
  • Guadec : The annual conference of Gnome Hackers with lot of worldwide attendees
  • KDE Akademy : This year with around 150 active contributors coming from all over the world.

The obviousness is: if openSUSE has no booth there, you just see Ubuntu and Redhat, and let’s add Debian, Mageia etc for Fosdem or Scale.

You all know how much I like our Geeko community. And when Akademy staff proposed us to run a booth, I said yes, great I will be there!
After comparing ways to go to Brno, the Geeko’s car was the less expensive, and allow me to pick the demo touch screen at SUSE Headquarter.
So I took a full week off and drive 2000 kilometers to make it happens.

Randa meetings – August 2014 – report from a Geeko’s point of view

2 Weeks ago myself and Françoise had joined the [http://www.randa-meetings.ch/ Randa Meeting] in Switzerland.

This event is a full hack-week where between around fifty people, that help to change the world, met together and hack around [http://www.kde.org KDE Community] related stuff. More on

I’ve heard about Randa from years, and had seen numerous reports about how Randa hack-week has allowed lots of changes : Plasma, Software collection, etc…

This year, we decided not only to financially sponsor the event, but also be part of as simple helper, with the status of newcomers in the KDE community contributors. Just to check how it goes.
Mario Fux (the organizer) didn’t fake his involvement to make this week a success, in a full open source spirit.



We’re reporting below a number of blog post that have been made during the hackweek.
And as the icing on the cake, you could just watch the video realized during the week.

GNOME 3.12 classic running on openSUSE 13.1

Just in case gnome does not open in the classic mode after selecting it as session from display manager, then edit /usr/share/applications/gnome-shell-classic.desktop and change the Exec line to read Exec=/usr/bin/gnome-shell --mode=classic

You can also switch to classic mode from within the running gnome session by doing Alt+F2 > gnome-shell -r --mode=classic

Tiny Core kiwi-ltsp thin client

Couple of days back went to a school here to demonstrate what openSUSE Education Li-f-e with KIWI-LTSP can bring to their lab. We have created a product based on Li-f-e called My sCool Server. It brings together all the goodies that a modern operating system must have and all the softwares required by the state board curriculum in one seamless package.

LXQT is ready for testing

The stable branch of LXQT, the QT branch of LXDE is now available for openSUSE:13.1 and openSUSE:Factory.
Following are a few screenshots of lxqt, which will be quite familiar to any of you that dabbled with Razor-qt in the past.

Here is the Main Desktop (note, this is using the “flat” theme, and the default openbox windowmanager)

LXQT can offer a fully composited desktop, through the compton compositor, and includes a GUI tool for configuring.

Resulting in a highly configurable composited desktop:

LXQT also provides a powerful configuration tool, which allows you to tweak things the way you like…

So if you’re looking for something to try out, please, give it a shot.

Please keep in mind, we are considering this a “Beta” quality release, so there are still some rough edges.

Additionally, lxqt is currently un-branded for openSUSE, so I certainly wouldn’t turn down help from folks that are into helping out with that sort of thing.

Stable packages are available for openSUSE:13.1(i586, x86_64, armv6l and armv7l) and openSUSE:Factory (i586 and x86_64) at:
X11:lxde:lxqt

Unstable Packages (latest git pulls), are available for 13.1 and Factory, i586 at:
devel:cloverleaf:lxqt:UNSTABLE

And if you happen to be running Fedora, i586 and x86_64 packages are available at:

Proprietary AMD/ATI Catalyst fglrx 14.4 (14.10.1006-1) rpm released

As of May 2nd, a bunch of new rpm for FGLRX has been released for openSUSE 11.4 to 13.1 including Tumbleweed

Notice

This release concern only owners of radeon HD5xxx or above.
For older gpu, the fglrx-legacy is still 13.1, and thus didn’t work with openSUSE 12.3 or above.
SDB:AMD_fgrlx_legacy
Beware of that, and prefer the free open-source radeon driver which came out of the box from your openSUSE distribution.
For 12.3 and especially 13.1 the free radeon often offer a better experience than the old fglrx-legacy, especially for HD2xxx-HD4xxx range.

Performance on some Steam OS games is lower on 1GB graphics memory cards, compared with 2GB graphics memory cards
Some Piglit tests cause a system hang under Ubuntu

This Catalyst fglrx version support openSUSE version from 11.4 to 13.1 plus Tumbleweed (thus covering kernel from 3.11 to 3.14 series).
A special thanks to Sebastian Siebert for his effort on making this driver working under openSUSE and latest kernel.

Proprietary AMD/ATI Catalyst fglrx rpms released

Patience is a virtue, especially with AMD gpu drivers, but today is the FGLRX day!

Yesterday Sebastian Siebert has published new versions for almost everything (except legacy dead horse).

So after 3 versions of the driver, compiled for 6 versions of openSUSE, under 2 arch, the rpms have been published today

Question : how many compilation does that mean? 🙂

The driver is also called fglrx, and you should not mix the different repository. So take care of that.

Proprietary AMD/ATI Catalyst fglrx 13.12 (13.251-3) rpm get a new build release

Just a small note about a new build (-3) of the 13.251 fglrx version.

Changelog

AMD has changed /etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default database in its tarball

The packages have just been published on geeko.ioda.net, so next time you zypper up the new build should appear as a proposed update
