LXDE can do it! LXDE on Android smartphone!

Yes i did it. I made LXDE running on my new Android smartphoe, the latest HTC masterpiece, the HTC HERO. Here some shots:

That’s great! But there is a main problem here, I’m not running openSUSE with X11:lxde packages, but debian with their stuff. I cannot use my geeko because the phone is an ARM and our openSUSE@ARM looks to still be in an early development stage. This post wants to be a ping to or openSUSE@ARM project and of course some marketing to this great and light Desktop Enviroment. For people interested in, here some hardware infos:

T4L: You can easily update your Twitter status from the CLI by using this one simple command:
curl -u user:password -d status=”Your status message” http://twitter.com/statuses/update.xml
where user is your username and password is your Twitter password entered in plaintext. Replace the text Your status message with anything you wish.

Improved mirror selection for India

Recently, it became evident that users in India don’t get good mirrors. This was solved by configuring a few German and US mirrors to serve users from India.

Courtesy of Adrian Reber from Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, there is an illustrative screenshot that visualizes the efficacy of this. The world map shows accesses to their openSUSE mirror by country (live view). In openSUSE’s MirrorBrain configuration, this mirror is set up to receive German, Danish, Polish, and Indian requests.

The background is that India has bad connectivity to neighbouring countries, but good connection to German and US mirrors. Therefore, now a few German and US mirrors are configured to serve India. The screenshot below demonstrates this for the mirror of the Esslingen University of Applied Sciences:

The world map clearly shows how the mirror gets nearly exclusively German requests, as well as those from India. The same happens for some other German and some US mirrors.

Note that if a mirror in India should become available (would be nice!), it would automatically be preferred, and the other mirrors become fallback mirrors.

While it is not new that we do this, the screenshot of Adrian’s analysis illustrates the issue very nicely. We have similar configuration for a number of countries, where a mirror selection purely based on countries and regions wouldn’t work. For this kind of tuning, we depend on user input.

SUSE Studio Launch – and openSUSE

Today the SUSE Appliance program was launched by Novell. The interesting part for openSUSE is the launch of  SUSE Studio.  SUSE Studio is a web-based tool to build complete software appliances based on SUSE Linux Enterprise and also openSUSE. A software appliance is a ready-to run image that you can copy on your harddisk and start directly – or it comes packaged as a virtual image that you can boot using e.g. Xen. Normally software appliances are custom made for a specific purpose, e.g. a database server.

I just build on top of openSUSE 11.1 a git server appliance. The interface is very intuitive so that most of the time used was waiting for the image to be created – and building the images is extremely fast  (the LiveDVD image took 4:21min to build, the hard disk image only 2:35mins)! The SUSE Studio folks have created a great product – congratulations!

LXDE, working on “branding-openSUSE”!

People that use my HOME project p,robably noticed lots of packages upgrades this days, they are most of all code fixing (to fix gcc post build checks) but some of them are also packages improvments, right now infact, lxde-settings-daemon result to be obsoletes and will be dropped soon from the repo.But excluding this “developers only” topics, you may be interested to know that i’m orking on “branding packages“. the first branding packages will be released today (or next week when i’ll be back from greece XD). The most important branding picture i need to create il the logout one:

As you can see, even if it’s wonderful, it like a punch in our eyes, we need a GREEN, suse based image. Please help me, i’m not so good with images. you can download the original logo from LXDE svn here. Any way, the image MUST be a 325×125 png file.

Official X11:lxde project now open! We need you!

Thanks to Pavol Rusnak, the official project X11:lxde is now open, first packages are already there available for testing, but, some of them just fail because of code and security checks, we need some patches than, before provide you the best packages you can imagine for that DE.

WE NEED YOU!!!

First Steps with QT/KDE Programming

Since Saturday i’m lerarning prtogramming QT/KDE. It is very interesting. My first “Hello World”-Program has now an localisation in DE und EN, and an Online-Help. The next Step is an Chapter about Basics and Structure from the KDE-Programs.
