This morning when I started to work I found a bug report about Hermes. Nothing amazing so far, but hey – there is a patch attached to fix the problem!
We all know that this is the way it works in communities, but still, everytime it is a very good experience to get a patch that fixes something that was overseen, not thought through or forgotten for whatever reason. It means basically that somebody has found the problem and has not gone away but found it worth to take a closer look and help to fix it. For me, that is a great acceptance of my work and I bet that most developers feel that way.
So, if you want to motivate a developer, simply send a patch 🙂
Thanks, Christian, for bnc #537106 coming with a fix, you made my day.

Made my day…
September 7th, 2009 by Klaas FreitagOpenOffice_org 3.1.1 final available for openSUSE
September 4th, 2009 by Petr MladekI’m happy to announce OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 final packages for openSUSE. They are available in the Build Service OpenOffice:org:STABLE project and include many upstream and Go-oo fixes. Please, check the wiki page for more details about the openSUSE OOo build.
The openSUSE OOo team hopes that you will be happy with this release. Though, any software contains bugs and we kindly ask you to report them, so that we could fixed them in the future releases.
Other information and plans:
We have also updated the LanguageTool extension to the version 0.9.9. It includes many fixes and improvements, especially, it should not longer print the many error messages. Unfortunately, the new version works only with JRE-1.6 or higher. It should be fine on most systems. Anyway, if you get an error message from the menu Tools/LanguageTool/About…, you need to set a better JRE in Tools/Options…/OpenOffice.org/Java.
We are already working on the 3.2 release. I would like to put the first alpha build into the OpenOffice:org:UNSTABLE project within next few weeks. The final release is planned for the end of November.
Hermes Improvements
September 3rd, 2009 by Klaas FreitagI did some interesting changes to the Hermes instance of openSUSE.
There have been complaints that it is not possible to follow requests that have been originated by oneself, which can result in the weird situation that one does not get information what happened to a request. I fixed that by adding a new subscription called OBS Request Author to the Hermes start page that informs you about all changes to a request originated by you. All people who already had a subscription on the request change notifications have been automatically subscribed. The subscription can of course be removed on the Hermes page if it is not wanted.
Another problem was that people who are subscribed on Build Failure with the _mypackages special filter were flooded by mails. That happens because the _mypackages filter thinks a package belongs to you if you’re either maintainer of the project or package. Since this is not what maintainers of big projects want I created a _mypackagesstrict filter that only fires if one is really the maintainer of the package. To enable this fix, please go to the Hermes Expert page to edit your subscription to BIULD_FAILURE. Edit the filter to set it to special value _mypackagesstrict.
I hope that makes Hermes again a bit more useful for you. Please let me know what you think!
openSUSE-LXDE live CD now ready!
September 2nd, 2009 by Andrea FlorioYes, that’s true! After some develop and tests i finally completed the openSUSE-LXDE live installable iso based on openSUSE 11.1 made with SUSE-STUDIO.
I provide now, only 32bit (i686) image because that may still need some testing.
Some great news, bug #531667 has been accepted and fixed, that means that suse 11.2 will be able to run slim using /etc/init.d/xdm script as usual. The iso already includes that fixs.

Oh, i forgot, some release notes and links:
RELEASE NOTES:
Login Manager : SLIM
Login manager used here is very lightweight, i’m talking about SLIM. it’s actually configured to autologin ROOT user on live CD; that setting is also saved on installed system (if you choose to install it), so to remove autologin (or just to autologin with you user) you MUST edit /etc/slim.conf, the file is well commented will not be difficult to find the lines.

Building against openSUSE:Factory
September 2nd, 2009 by Andreas JaegerMagnus started recently a discussion on the openSUSE packaging mailing list (thread start is archived here) where he stated that it takes very long for him to build packages for openSUSE’s Factory distribution since the packages are only build once the complete distribution has been built.
The solution that was proposed – and which should be used in general – is to build against the snapshot repository of openSUSE:Factory. (more…)
Firewall Zone Switcher Updated
August 28th, 2009 by lnusselI have updated the Firewall Zone Switcher.
It now starts with a main window by default instead of
directly going to the system tray. There’s a settings dialog that
allows to enable the system tray icon and optionally also enables
starting the applet on log-in. Furthermore the daemon now uses
PolicyKit for access control and the applet supports i18n.

Clicks with touchpad trick (11.2 M6)
August 27th, 2009 by Ricardo Varas SantanaIf you are running the openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 6 (Gnome 2.27.5, Kernel 2.6.31-rc6-3-default) and find out that clicks of touchpad do not work, then this might help you a bit.
First of all, go to the Control Center, and look up for the Mouse item. Then click on Touchpad (obviously not using your computer’s touchpad, heh) and mark the option Enable mouse clicks with touchpad. That’d work fine 🙂
I must thank my friend Pedro Villavicencio of Ubuntu for letting me know about this solution.
Workshop for BITA members
August 25th, 2009 by Jigish GohilI’ll be conducting a full day workshop organized by Baroda IT Association (BITA) on “Opportunities with Linux & Open Source Technology” for it’s members on Saturday, 29th August 2009.
Quoting from the circular sent out:
Friends, it is the time to click on current opportunities with Linux. As you would be knowing that the Higher Secondary School of Gujarat(India) Board Syllabus are now covering Linux, Open Source Technology, Open Office etc….Again, Government also believes and is promoting open source platform. It is high time to capture such business, and so this TECHNOLOGY should be well understood by the BITA Members.
Potential customer-base comprising of more than 5000 Schools, thousands of students, lots of home PCs – today and in near future, there will definitely be a lot of increase in the need of dual-platform in Computer systems. Are we ready for that?
We will be having hands-on sessions on openSUSE-Edu: Li-f-e (Linux for Education) distribution, participants will get to take home a copy too.
More information and participation form (if you are a BITA member) here.

LXDE can do it! LXDE on Android smartphone!
August 24th, 2009 by Andrea FlorioYes i did it. I made LXDE running on my new Android smartphoe, the latest HTC masterpiece, the HTC HERO. Here some shots:
That’s great! But there is a main problem here, I’m not running openSUSE with X11:lxde packages, but debian with their stuff. I cannot use my geeko because the phone is an ARM and our openSUSE@ARM looks to still be in an early development stage. This post wants to be a ping to or openSUSE@ARM project and of course some marketing to this great and light Desktop Enviroment. For people interested in, here some hardware infos:
