GSoC introduction – openSUSE@ARM

May 4th, 2009 by

Hi openSUSE community!

I’m glad my proposal was accepted and today I want to introduce myself and my GSoC project.

/me , thats Jan-Simon Möller and I’m just finishing my Diploma in electrical engineering at the Leibniz Universität Hannover. I’m coordinator of the openSUSE Weekly Newsletter and contribute also to the hamradio repository, the iFolder project and the openSUSE Build Service. See also my “People of openSUSE” interview.

My Project in short:  openSUSE@ARM
My aim during GSoC 2009 is to port first the base to the ARM platform. Then KIWI needs also some attention when it comes to imaging and after that the tools, Kernel and X11.

I’ll heavily use the capabilities of the openSUSE Build Service, which is now ready for ARM.

During the last few days, I’ve done many little preparations to get it all flying when GSoC coding period starts.

Stay tuned !

A Week of Geeko Love

openSUSE Week Counter

openSUSE Week Counter

UPDATE: New Dates. You now have more time to plan!

As you can see the week of the 11th to the 17th of May is openSUSE Week.  What’s so special about this week?  Well in a nutshell, the aim is to get all corners of the community together to focus on specific topics.  These topics range from wiki cleanup to packaging; testing certain features/functions to translation work; discussion with the openSUSE Board and almost anything inbetween.

I’d like to suggest a couple of other items to the list (yes I know I need to add them to the wiki).  Both items are marketing related:

  1. Create good screencasts, ideally of each major component but I’m open to ideas.
  2. As requested by certain a11y users & proponents, close caption the video that we have (and the interviews I still need to upload).
  3. I know I said a couple but maths was never my strong point 😉 Try and do some video interviews that we can group under the “People Of openSUSE” banner.  I’ve already started this but mainly with Novell employees.  If community members are willing to help out, please let me know (it could even be you filming yourself without any need for video conferencing).

So please make sure you come and join the fun, remember the openSUSE community wont succeed unless you join in.  We may even have the opportunity to have a soap box where you can voice your complaints and issues.  The important thing is the openSUSE Week is about you the community for you the community, to get something out of it you need to put something into it.  Lastly it’s all about having good old fashioned geeko fun!  So come along and join the fun 😀

How developers see openSUSE

February 19th, 2009 by

You probably know that a lot of openSUSE developers are sitting in the SUSE office in Prague, Czech Republic. They are also openSUSE users.

The whole story started by a flame on a mailing list why some of us are not happy with the current state of openSUSE. It turned out there is a lot of different issues. So, we’ve met on a raining winter Friday 3 weeks ago to collect those issues as well as things that people consider to be good about openSUSE.

The result of the hours-long discussion is a list of positive and negative things about openSUSE, very subjective view of the group of developers in Prague. Go, look at the list. There is a lot of problems that I personally see lurking in our community, spelled out loud. The range is wide, from basic community issues to very technical problems that are basically missing features in the distribution.

So, we have collected the feedback. But the question is, what to do with it?

Firstly, I believe the lists are great food for thought. You might not agree with everything, but still, there is some truth in it. At least, those are problems that people consider important enough to try to solve them – encouraging.

Secondly, consider this blog as call for contribution. If you believe some of the areas are really worth improving, get in touch with people listed on the wiki, improve the description  in the wiki, propose solutions. One restriction though – please, do not add additional items to the page. We want to keep the ideas where they belong – features eventually to end up in openFate, project-related problems on the mailing lists, …Also, this is not a general list of issues the openSUSE project needs to address. As I’ve written above – the page is a subjective view of a group of people. If you think we need a more general approach, please, bring the idea on openSUSE mailing lists.

Looking forward to your feedback!

openSUSE Release Party in Nürnberg

December 19th, 2008 by

openSUSE 11.1 Releaseparty in NürnbergYesterday evening we had in Nürnberg the local release party which Martin announced a couple of days ago. I think we had around 50 participants, many from the local Novell office, but also people travelling by car for over an hour. The group was quite different: Developers, testers, users of openSUSE – also some people that just started using openSUSE and wanted to chat and celebrate with us. The youngest participant (my daughter) was 8 months old and sleeping most of the time.

We were fortunate to distribute openSUSE 11.1 DVDs and green hats.

I enjoyed talking with many that showed up and received as main feedback from many of those that I talked with: When will the presentation start? So, something to change for next time…

Thanks to Martin, Melanie and Jacqueline for the party – and thanks to all that joined us!

Mr. Carugo , the DIDASCA Rector told me about a “SOLD OUT”, 650 peoples in a room where only 500 was allowed… so.. a GREAT DAY!! Oh, i forgot.. Thanks to marketing team that sent me 50 Promo DVDs. Thanks

OpenSuSE Nicaragua in SFD 2008

September 24th, 2008 by

On Sept. 20th, the Free Software Community in Nicaragua celebrated the “Software Freedom Day” at the “Universidad Centroamerica, UCA” Campus. The Nicaraguan OpenSuSE Community was there, supporting the event and promoting our favorite Linux Distribution.

As a Member of the Nicaraguan OpenSuSE community and the Nicaraguan Amateur Astronomy Group, I’ve set up a small stand running Stellarium in my oS.11 Laptop.

After that, I conducted a small workshop for people interested in learning Stellarium.

That was a big day!
