Enlightenment live CD/USB – progress report

Ladies and Gents,
we’re glad to announce that SOAD Linux 3.2.1 is out and available for download.

This is a bugfix release mostly. Please read the changelog:

We do need your feedback about “Ecomorph” – some kind of auto configuration script is already managed (no manual adjustments are required before launch), but looks like some important parameters/values are still missed unfortunately. Already collected several “White Screen Compiz Bug” reports from owners of NVIDIA GPU’s and just wish to collect some more to get the reason how to improve it. Right now (for LiveCD/LiveUSB) “Ecomorph” should work with the modern NVIDIA (drivers already in) and with other video cards, where “Compiz” is supported by a current “Mesa”/(current Xorg drivers). The case here is to tweak some values to be sure that things could work “out from the box”.
Example: if we’re building/installing NVIDIA drivers manually from official *.run.sh – everything is just fine. If we’re using the “packaged” rpm’s with the same drivers – “White Screen” could happen with “Ecomorph”.

As a sweet eye-candy the work for “Restoration of a GANT iconset” has been started – hope you like it. Current status – a bit more then Alpha, works, but feedback is highly appreciated.

Soon we’re planning to update our Enlightenment repositories up to the current E-svn. QA is in progress. Unfortunately bleeding-edje svn code is not always stable enough :).

Universal Go-oo 3.1.1 build available

I am happy to announce that the universal Go-oo 3.1.1 build is available for Linux (i586, x86_64) and MAC OSX Intel. See also download and installation instructions. The builds include many upstream and Go-oo fixes.

Go-oo team hopes that you will be happy with this release. Though, any software contains bugs and we kindly ask you to report them, so that we could fix them in the future releases. Also you could send feedback to the ooo-build@lists.freedesktop.org mailing list or contact us on irc.freenode.net, channel #go-oo.

The following OOo-3.2 release should be available in the end of November.

PS: I feel a bit schizophrenic. I want to blog about the openSUSE builds at planetsuse and about the universal build at planet.go-oo. Both builds are based on the same sources, so the schedule is almost the same. We only do more alpha and beta builds for openSUSE because it is so easy with the Build Service.

OpenOffice_org 3.1.1 final available for openSUSE

I’m happy to announce OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 final packages for openSUSE. They are available in the Build Service OpenOffice:org:STABLE project and include many upstream and Go-oo fixes. Please, check the wiki page for more details about the openSUSE OOo build.

The openSUSE OOo team hopes that you will be happy with this release. Though, any software contains bugs and we kindly ask you to report them, so that we could fixed them in the future releases.

Other information and plans:

We have also updated the LanguageTool extension to the version 0.9.9. It includes many fixes and improvements, especially, it should not longer print the many error messages. Unfortunately, the new version works only with JRE-1.6 or higher. It should be fine on most systems. Anyway, if you get an error message from the menu Tools/LanguageTool/About…, you need to set a better JRE in Tools/Options…/OpenOffice.org/Java.

We are already working on the 3.2 release. I would like to put the first alpha build into the OpenOffice:org:UNSTABLE project within next few weeks. The final release is planned for the end of November.

openSUSE-LXDE live CD now ready!

Yes, that’s true! After some develop and tests i finally completed the openSUSE-LXDE live installable iso based on openSUSE 11.1 made with SUSE-STUDIO.

I provide now, only 32bit (i686) image because that may still need some testing.

Some great news, bug #531667 has been accepted and fixed, that means that suse 11.2 will be able to run slim using /etc/init.d/xdm script as usual. The iso already includes that fixs.

Login Manager : SLIM

Login manager used here is very lightweight, i’m talking about SLIM. it’s actually configured to autologin ROOT user on live CD; that setting is also saved on installed system (if you choose to install it), so to remove autologin (or just to autologin with you user) you MUST edit /etc/slim.conf, the file is well commented will not be difficult to find the lines.

Clicks with touchpad trick (11.2 M6)

If you are running the openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 6 (Gnome 2.27.5, Kernel 2.6.31-rc6-3-default) and find out that clicks of touchpad do not work, then this might help you a bit.

First of all, go to the Control Center, and look up for the Mouse item. Then click on Touchpad (obviously not using your computer’s touchpad, heh) and mark the option Enable mouse clicks with touchpad. That’d work fine 🙂

LXDE can do it! LXDE on Android smartphone!

Yes i did it. I made LXDE running on my new Android smartphoe, the latest HTC masterpiece, the HTC HERO. Here some shots:

That’s great! But there is a main problem here, I’m not running openSUSE with X11:lxde packages, but debian with their stuff. I cannot use my geeko because the phone is an ARM and our openSUSE@ARM looks to still be in an early development stage. This post wants to be a ping to or openSUSE@ARM project and of course some marketing to this great and light Desktop Enviroment. For people interested in, here some hardware infos:

Thanks to Gwenview, you can email the pictures of your last trip, which are usually many, without having to spend hours. It’s very easy!

Open Gwenview and go to Plugins -> Images -> Email Images

OpenOffice_org 3.1.1 beta3 available for openSUSE

I’m happy to announce OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 beta3 packages for openSUSE. They are available in the Build Service OpenOffice:org:UNSTABLE project and include many upstream and Go-oo fixes. Please, look for more details about the openSUSE OOo build on the wiki page.

The packages are beta versions and might include even serious bugs. Therefore they are not intended for data-critical usage. A good practice is to archive any important data before an use, …

As usual, we kindly ask any interested beta testers to try the package and report bugs.

Other information and plans:

The build is based on the upstream 3.1.1-rc1 release. I have marked it beta3 because upstream had found another blocker bugs in the meantime. Note that our builds are delayed after the upstream by few days by definition.

I have also fixed the OpenOffice_org-LanguageTool package to do not print the ugly messages. I do not understand why I did not see them when I tested the 0.9.9 update. I am sorry for the inconvenience.

The next build will be available about August 27, it should be 3.1.1-rc1 and I hope that it will be the final build.

Some KDE 4 tips you should know

KDE 4 is definitively my daily desktop environment, although it’s not yet mature like the 3.5.x branch i consider it enough stable and usable, but sometime the default settings and the few time available, don’t help us to appreciate it, so let’s resume some little tip for beginners that feel lost with everything new and don’t want waste their time.

Enlightenment is coming…

It’s scheduled to release Enlightenment-DR17 Desktop Shell as a Christmas gift and we glad to announce the update of SOAD to the version 3.2.0. It’s a current openSUSE-11.1 with all updates and Enlightenment set as a prime GUI.

We tried to cook a nice documentation. Please examine it before you consider to download the images:

The EFL is compiled from official 3-rd pre-release sources and pretty stable here.
Software is updated and several nice utilities added as well. We created some modest GUI customizations/presets and hope that you like them.

Our TODO list is to fix all errors with “Ecomorph” and provide it for LiveCD and USB systems.

We wish to say “HUGE THANKS!” to “cyberorg” (Jigish Gohil) and “schaefi” (Marcus Schaefer) for their help with this release.
